Rickmansworth Heartstart

Rickmansworth Heartstart was set up by our team of instructors to teach members of the public Emergency Life Support. We run courses for club members and organise lectures to groups such as GPs, practice nurses and pharmacists as well as groups of cardiac patients at local hospitals.  Proceeds from these activities help raise funds for the British Heart Foundation and to help Rickmansworth Heartstart keep going.

Heartstart UK is an initiative co-ordinated by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to teach members of the public what to do in a life-threatening emergency: simple skills that can save lives. It provides opportunities for people to learn the vital skills of Emergency Life Support (ELS). Through Heartstart UK the BHF aims to strengthen the chain of survival by promoting and supporting ELS training in the community.

The benefit of CPR performed by a bystander in an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is significant. The most important factor determining survival after a cardiac arrest is the time from collapse of the casualty to defibrillation - performing CPR buys time and more than doubles the chances of survival

The Rickmansworth Heartstart session consists of a lecture and practical session using dummies.  We offer practical advice, whilst encouraging discussion on improving resuscitation knowledge and practice.

We have recently been observed by the regional co-ordinator of the BHF who was so impressed by our lecture and practical sessions that she requested a copy of the lecture to use as a good practice example in the hope of standardising Heartstart lectures country wide!

We currently deliver Heartstart lectures on a regular basis to groups and individuals throughout South Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.  We are also able to deliver a tailored version of these sessions for groups of children (schools / clubs etc) on request.
